A young child with autism, João Gabriel Ferreira dos Santos, was tragically discovered deceased in a sewage tank in Brazil after informing his mother that he needed to use the toilet. The five-year-old went missing on Sunday morning, sparking a frantic search by his parents and hundreds of volunteers.
Despite extensive efforts involving dogs, drones, and a helicopter, it took three days to locate João’s body in a pool of water on the torn cover of a bio-digester near his family’s rural residence. The bio-digester, used to decompose waste on a farm in Araucária, Paraná, had a punctured cover that allowed the water to accumulate, leading to the devastating outcome.
Firefighters were able to recover João after draining the contaminated water from the structure. The fenced area where the incident occurred had a gap through which the child could have accessed the hazardous site. Investigations by civil police and forensic teams are ongoing, with authorities currently treating the incident as a tragic accident.
Governor Ratinho Junior expressed profound sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to João’s family. The community is mourning the loss of the young boy, whose unforeseen demise has raised awareness about safety measures around such facilities.
