Prince Charles and Princess Diana celebrated their wedding anniversary today, marking 45 years since their grand ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral on July 29, 1981. The event was witnessed by 3,500 guests, including the Royal Family, while a staggering 750 million people watched the televised spectacle from their homes.

Despite the initial fairy-tale atmosphere, the marriage did not have a happy ending. The couple, who had sons Princes William and Harry, separated after 11 years and officially divorced in 1996, just before Princess Diana’s tragic death in 1997.

The couple’s relationship was under scrutiny, with details emerging about their limited meetings before getting engaged. Leading up to the wedding, the 20-year-old Diana received a supportive note from Charles, who acknowledged his own doubts but encouraged her with words of pride and reassurance.

However, the night before the wedding, Charles reportedly disclosed to Diana that he did not love her, leaving her heartbroken. Diana had also expressed doubts to her sisters about the marriage but ultimately went through with the ceremony with a mix of excitement and nerves.

The wedding featured iconic moments, including Diana’s stunning bridal gown, which was kept a secret until the big day by designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel. Diana’s shoes, adorned with intricate details and a hidden message, were equally impressive.

As the day unfolded, Diana’s unease about Charles’s past relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles was evident. Despite the challenges, Diana remained composed and carried out her royal duties, even amid personal turmoil.

The wedding day had its share of emotional moments, with one of the bridesmaids, Clementine Hambro, shedding tears after a mishap inside the palace. Nevertheless, the day proceeded with pomp and circumstance, culminating in the balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace.

The intricate details and behind-the-scenes stories of the royal wedding continue to captivate audiences, shedding light on the complexities of royal marriages and the pressures faced by individuals thrust into the public eye.
