A court proceeding revealed that Robert Bush, a disgraced funeral director, spent over £42,000 on vacations while committing fraudulent activities against bereaved families. Bush is set to undergo a sentencing hearing for more than 60 offenses spanning a 12-year period.
Having pleaded guilty to 67 charges, Bush confessed to 30 counts of obstructing lawful burials and 37 other offenses, including fraud, fraudulent trading, and theft. The sentencing session, scheduled for five days and ending on Friday, will involve the review of over 100 victim impact statements by the presiding judge.
One of the testimonies heard was from Jasmine Beverley, whose son Sunny Beverley-Conlin was discovered at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors on Hessle Road in 2024, nearly two years after his family received what Bush claimed were his ashes following a funeral held in his honor.
The uncovering of Baby Sunny’s remains came about when the police were alerted to the site after directors from another funeral home were asked by Bush, who was vacationing in Arizona at the time, to assist with body retrieval. This led to the shocking discovery of numerous bodies stored in a cold storage area, some in advanced stages of decomposition.
Details emerged in court regarding Bush’s lavish personal spending habits, including substantial sums on holidays, motorcycle racing, and home improvements between 2017 and 2024. Despite defrauding clients by accepting payments for unauthorized funeral plans and providing incorrect ashes to families, Bush purportedly claimed to withdraw only £3,000 monthly from his business, raising suspicions about his financial activities.
Prosecutors highlighted Bush’s extensive holiday expenditures over seven years, which encompassed trips to various destinations and indulgences in luxury items and experiences. The investigation into Bush’s financial transactions revealed significant sums passing through his accounts, with notable discrepancies between reported turnover and actual handling of cash.
Moreover, the court was informed that Bush’s mismanagement of finances reflected his skewed priorities, leading to neglect of his responsibilities towards clients. Notably, the search of Legacy Funeral Directors uncovered distressing items, such as a bag containing the remains of a baby marked with hospital wristbands.
During the sentencing hearing, Jasmine directly addressed Bush, expressing her anguish over the mishandling of her son’s remains and emphasizing the need for dignity and respect in handling such sensitive matters. The emotional testimony underscored the profound impact of Bush’s actions on her family and the lasting trauma caused by the ordeal.
