A 13-year-old girl passed away under perplexing circumstances while attending a military summer camp, during which her family was prevented from communicating with her directly for an extended period.
The girl, identified as Dafne Zapata Quintos Martínez, had enrolled at the Marina Doenitz Military Academy in Ciudad Madero, Mexico, on July 13. Parents were not allowed to contact their children during the camp, with updates provided by the staff.
After four days, Dafne’s mother, Alejandra Quintos, received a tragic call notifying her of her daughter’s sudden demise. Alejandra expressed her shock, stating that she had entrusted Dafne healthy and well to the camp for a military-style program.
According to Alejandra, a staff member had previously informed her that Dafne had vomited and fainted during a physical activity, resulting in a split lip. Despite initial treatment and improvement, Dafne’s condition deteriorated, with symptoms including coughing, vomiting, and incontinence.
Allegations emerged from a fellow camper suggesting that Dafne had been mistreated, pushed, and subjected to harsh punishments. Dafne’s grandmother mentioned visible injuries on her face, indicating possible physical abuse.
Following Dafne’s death, parents of other camp attendees collected their children, who later provided statements to authorities. Accusations of forced drug consumption and physical violence among students surfaced, which the academy’s director denied, attributing Dafne’s death to an undisclosed pre-existing medical condition.
The official cause of Dafne’s death was listed as “asphyxia caused by submersion” on her death certificate. Her family plans to conduct an independent autopsy, while the Tamaulipas Prosecutor’s Office has sealed off the academy for further investigation.
A tribute to Dafne highlighted her love for animals, particularly her dogs, and her mother vowed to seek justice relentlessly.
