An Italian football journalist is believed to have been set on fire in a tragic incident as investigations into his death continue. Luigi ‘Luca’ Esposito was reported missing after failing to respond to calls from friends. Authorities suspect the assault occurred before midnight when his charred body was found at a remote location in Salerno, Italy.
Esposito, 53, who usually communicated with colleagues about article headlines, had his last WhatsApp activity recorded at 10:47 pm. His car keys were discovered beside his body, but his mobile phone was missing. Initially thought to have been shot before being burned, an autopsy has been inconclusive on whether Esposito was alive when the fire started.
Further tests are pending to determine the cause of death, a process that typically takes up to two months. The examination was conducted by coroner Giovanni Casaburi in the presence of Esposito’s family consultant, Giuseppe Raimo. Due to the severe burns, identification was challenging initially, with confirmation only made possible after matching the car keys with Esposito’s belongings.
Investigations reveal that Esposito arrived at Contrada Cioffi in Salerno around 11 pm in his white Lancia car, as per nearby CCTV footage. He then left the vehicle on foot, presumably to meet someone. The autopsy indicated injuries consistent with a severe beating, including head trauma and fractures in the pelvis, face, and ribs.
Contrary to initial reports of gunshot wounds, no bullets were found in his body. It is speculated that the fractures may have resulted from the intense heat of the fire. Prosecutors are treating the case as a murder, with Raffaele Cantone, a top anti-mafia official, leading the inquiry.
Salerno, where Esposito resided and met his demise, is notorious for being a stronghold of the Camorra crime syndicate, deeply embedded in various facets of local society. While Esposito’s personal life is under scrutiny for potential motives, his professional involvements are also being examined.
Esposito, a fervent fan of Serie B club Salernitana 1919, managed a popular fan site for the team, worked as a sports columnist for a local news outlet, and appeared as a pundit on Italian TV. Despite being known for his outspoken nature and broad network in the football realm, discrepancies have emerged regarding his alleged employment at a regional agency, which the agency has denied.
Although Esposito claimed to be associated with The Order of Biologists of Campania and Molise, recent statements from the organization’s president refute his membership. Police have not made any arrests in connection with Esposito’s death, and investigations are ongoing.
