A dog boarder who neglected a family pet leading to its death was given a suspended prison sentence. Charlotte Sutton, 26, left the dog, named Hero, unattended for a prolonged period at her residence. Despite warnings from Braintree District Council about the legal requirements, Sutton continued the boarding operation without a license.

Following prosecution by the council, Sutton appeared in court and was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. She also pleaded guilty to operating an animal boarding business without proper licensing. The court sentenced her to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, along with 150 hours of unpaid work, a £10,000 payment towards prosecution costs, and a £154 victim surcharge.

In response to the sentencing, Leighanne Ship, Hero’s owner, expressed relief that justice was served for her beloved pet. Ship commended Braintree District Council for pursuing the case, emphasizing the importance of using licensed animal boarding services and the responsibility associated with caring for others’ pets.

Ship stated, “While we can never bring Hero back, his justice and our closure are now achieved. By sharing our story, we aim to prevent other families from enduring the pain and uncertainty we faced. Hero’s legacy will continue to protect others through our experience.”
