In the past decade, the UK has seen multiple changes in leadership, but amidst the political shifts, one constant presence remains in Downing Street.

Larry the cat has held the esteemed position of Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office since 2011, greeting visitors, checking security measures, and ensuring the comfort of antique furniture in the official residence. As the incoming Prime Minister, Andy Burnham will need to establish a positive relationship with this long-standing feline resident.

Larry, a stray tabby born in 2007, found his home at 10 Downing Street in 2011 after being adopted by the staff. Originally intended as a pet for David Cameron’s children, Larry’s tenure has extended through six prime ministers, including Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and Keir Starmer.

Despite the changes in leadership, Larry remains a constant fixture, funded by voluntary contributions from Downing Street staff. His playful antics and interactions with world leaders have garnered him much attention, with a dedicated parody account and a popular Instagram presence.

Over the years, Larry has navigated relationships with various four-legged companions, engaging in playful rivalries with other government pets like Palmerston from the Foreign Office. As Prime Minister Burnham prepares to introduce his family dog, Axel, a Bichon Frise and Poodle mix, to the Downing Street household, Larry’s adaptability and charm will once again be put to the test.

With Larry’s enduring popularity and knack for stealing the spotlight during official events, he continues to be a beloved figure in British politics, maintaining his position as the beloved feline resident of 10 Downing Street.
