Andy Burnham, in one of his initial acts as Prime Minister, has made a commitment to eradicate rough sleeping throughout the UK. Making a bold vow outside No10, the new leader of the Labour party declared his intention to take immediate action to address the issue.

Describing rough sleeping as one of the most glaring injustices in the country, Downing Street announced a significant funding injection of £340 million to support a minimum of 3,000 rough sleepers. This initiative aims to tackle the pressing issue and provide much-needed assistance.

Prior to his official speech as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham visited The Passage, a homelessness charity in Victoria, London. Reflecting on the successful “Everyone In” scheme implemented during the pandemic, which aided numerous rough sleepers, Burnham emphasized the importance of collective effort in combating homelessness.

Acknowledging the rise in rough sleeping during his tenure as Greater Manchester Mayor, Burnham highlighted the necessity of a unified approach across all cities to effectively address the issue. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and a shared commitment to helping vulnerable individuals.

Recent government data underscores the magnitude of the task facing the new Prime Minister in fulfilling his pledge. Statistics from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government revealed an increase in rough sleepers in England, with a substantial rise since 2010.

Amid his efforts to tackle homelessness, Burnham joined charity workers on outreach activities in Victoria, engaging directly with rough sleepers. He expressed his firsthand experience with homelessness as a mayor and his dedication to making a difference at a national level.

Praise for Burnham’s pledge to combat rough sleeping poured in from various quarters, with advocates commending his prioritization of the issue. The commitment to ending rough sleeping and building a more preventive support system was applauded as a crucial step towards eradicating homelessness for good.
