Rose Metcalf was halted in her path by the sounds of three violinists playing the iconic Titanic theme, “My Heart Will Go On,” on the Costa Concordia cruise liner on the evening of January 13, 2012. At that moment, the 23-year-old ship’s dancer, about to meet her Peruvian date for coffee, expressed her concern, considering it a bad omen. Tragically, hours later, one of the violinists met his fate along with 31 others when the ship, carrying 4,200 passengers, struck rocks near Italy’s Giglio Island and started to sink.
Rose, originally from Bournemouth, is prominently featured in Netflix’s top show, “Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea,” which depicts her heroic efforts in aiding 400 individuals to safety during the harrowing incident.
Recounting the chaos of the ship’s impact, Rose vividly describes the intense moment of realization when the vessel began to shudder and exhibit signs of impending disaster. She recognized the gravity of the situation, likening it to the fate of the Titanic, as the ship’s structural integrity was compromised.
Reflecting on the inadequate safety training on the Costa Concordia, Rose criticized the basic protocols in place, highlighting the lack of preparedness for a real-life emergency scenario.
In a moment of crisis, Rose took charge, organizing a human chain of crew members to facilitate the evacuation of hundreds of passengers and crew through the tilted corridors of the ship before it was too late.
Despite the traumatic experience and the loss of life, Rose’s quick thinking and bravery helped save numerous lives before she found herself stranded with a few others. Through resourcefulness and determination, she managed to attract attention for their rescue, ultimately aiding in their safe extraction.
After enduring years of trauma and struggles, Rose eventually found solace in America, where she underwent specialized therapy to overcome the emotional aftermath of the disaster. Her journey to healing was arduous but transformative, leading her to a path of empowerment and resilience.
Driven by a desire to prevent similar tragedies, Rose has dedicated herself to advocating for improved maritime safety standards, leveraging her own experience to inspire change and ensure the wellbeing of future travelers.
As she continues to impart her wisdom and expertise as a business coach, Rose remains committed to her mission of turning a harrowing experience into a source of inspiration and empowerment for others, embodying the spirit of resilience and hope.
