A tragic incident unfolded as a grandmother and her four grandchildren lost their lives due to carbon monoxide exposure inside a vehicle in Toledo, Ohio. Candace McAllister was driving her grandchildren when her SUV experienced a flat tire. Upon pulling over and seeking help from her son, all occupants were found unresponsive inside the vehicle with the engine running, prompting an emergency call. Investigators later discovered that carbon monoxide levels in the vehicle had reached five times the lethal limit.
The devastating event claimed the lives of Candace and her grandchildren: Liberty Coleman, four, Legacy Coleman, Storm Coleman, three, and Stone Coleman, two. Three children and their grandmother passed away immediately or shortly after being taken to the hospital. Legacy, the fourth child, was put on life support but tragically succumbed on July 17. Authorities confirmed no foul play and treated the incident as a mechanical accident.
Following impoundment of the Ford Explorer for testing, it was revealed that toxic exhaust fumes filled the vehicle’s interior rapidly when the engine was left running while stationary. The children’s mother, Adriana Coleman, expressed profound grief over the loss of her children, emphasizing their vibrant personalities and love-filled lives.
Toledo Fire Chief Allison Armstrong disclosed that investigators detected high carbon monoxide levels inside the vehicle, leading to further examination to determine the cause. The police towed the vehicle for additional investigation. Toledo Police spokesperson Sgt. Mohamad Nasser extended condolences to the affected family, while Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz expressed solidarity with the family and gratitude towards first responders for their swift actions under challenging circumstances.
