A man from the UK is facing charges of negligence following the tragic death of his three-year-old son in Cyprus. The incident occurred when the child fell from a fourth-floor hotel window in Chloraka, Paphos while reportedly playing with his father.
Emergency services responded to the scene around 6.40 pm on July 12, but unfortunately, the boy did not survive the fall. He was rushed to Paphos General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Subsequently, the 37-year-old father was taken into custody by authorities.
Reports indicate that the family, including a five-year-old girl, had just arrived on holiday that day. The heartbreaking event unfolded in front of the boy’s grandfather as they were heading downstairs for dinner.
The father appeared in court the following day, where law enforcement requested his detention for eight days to aid their investigation. During the court session, the father broke down in tears, leading to a temporary pause in proceedings.
Paphos’s Assistant Police Director of Operations, Michalis Nikolaou, confirmed that the father is being charged with causing death through a reckless or dangerous act, along with allegations of neglect of familial duty and responsibility.
The UK Foreign Office has stated that they are providing support to the family of the deceased British child in Cyprus and are liaising with local authorities during this difficult time.
