A man has admitted to murdering his mother after pretending to be asleep during police interrogations. Richard Clayton, aged 45, confessed to killing Angela Clayton, 74, at their residence in Newham, east London. The tragic incident occurred on February 17 when Clayton strangled his mother and then contacted emergency services.
Upon police and ambulance arrival at 12:48 pm, Angela Clayton was discovered lifeless in her bedroom. Subsequently, Richard Clayton was apprehended and chose to remain silent or feign sleep during questioning, leading to his murder charge the next day.
In a court appearance at the Old Bailey in central London, Clayton pleaded guilty to the murder. Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke of Scotland Yard expressed condolences to Angela’s family and emphasized the ongoing commitment to combating violence against women and girls.
The victim’s family issued a statement expressing their pursuit of justice for Angela. Richard Clayton is scheduled for sentencing at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, September 22.
