A NATO fighter jet caught fire during an emergency landing at a Greek airport, according to officials. The F-16 aircraft made the landing at Zakynthos (Zante) Airport following an in-flight fire indication during a training mission on Thursday afternoon.
The pilot, as reported by state broadcaster ERT, safely evacuated the aircraft and was confirmed to be in good health post the emergency landing. The F-16, operated by the 116th Fighter Wing at Araxos, was initially conducting a training mission over the broader Ionian Sea region before diverting to the airport, as per information from the Air Force General Staff.
Local media indicated that the runway has been closed for emergency services to address the situation. Firefighters are on-site, and flight operations have been suspended, as per reports from local outlet Ermis News.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident, and updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
