A 17-year-old tourist tragically lost her life in a suspected hit-and-run incident on the Costa del Sol after cheering on her national team at the World Cup.
Nikoline Piwoni Høie was struck by a vehicle, believed to be a lorry, on a dual carriageway in the early hours of Monday near La Cala de Mijas, about 20 miles from Marbella in southern Spain. The driver fled the scene without stopping.
The Norwegian teenager, hailing from Arendal, had gone missing after a night out with friends at the Funky Buddha nightclub in Puerto Banús, where they celebrated Norway’s 2-1 victory over Brazil in the World Cup.
Following the celebrations, Nikoline took transportation to an unfortunate encounter on the A-7. Emergency services were alerted around 5:20 am, but she could not be saved.
On holiday in the Costa del Sol since June 19, Nikoline was scheduled to return to Norway on the same day. The Spanish Civil Guard is investigating her death as a hit-and-run, with no arrests made yet.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Finn Greve-Isdahl expressed their profound grief, thanking the Arendal community for their support. Nikoline’s stepmother lamented the unfairness of her untimely death, while Arendal’s acting mayor described the incident as deeply tragic, with support being provided to affected individuals.
The Norwegian Foreign Ministry has been informed, and the embassy stands ready to offer assistance as the investigation continues.
