“Scottish Women Blame Contraceptive Injection for Brain Tumors”

A woman from the Scottish Highlands, Nicola McKay, is convinced that the contraceptive injection, Depo-Provera, which she took for an extended period, triggered three “devastating” brain tumors that have significantly impacted her life. Nicola, now 53, started using the Pfizer-manufactured drug in the early 2000s, believing it to be safe and convenient for preventing pregnancy.

Despite initially trusting the drug’s safety, Nicola now attributes the discovery of three brain tumors last year to her long-term use of the contraceptive injection. This belief is shared by numerous other women who have experienced similar health issues after taking Depo-Provera.

Nicola, a nurse, expressed how the tumors have transformed her life, turning her from a vibrant and active individual to someone who now struggles with the consequences of the condition, including seizures. Despite medical intervention, complete removal of the tumors was not feasible, leaving her to cope with ongoing challenges and the need for medication.

Trish Saunders, another victim of Depo-Provera, also shared her story, having undergone brain surgery due to a meningioma tumor linked to the contraceptive injection. A study published in the British Medical Journal in March 2024 highlighted an increased risk of this type of cancer associated with long-term use of Depo-Provera.

Legal actions are being pursued by Thompsons Solicitors Scotland on behalf of around 150 affected women, including Nicola and Trish. The complaints are under investigation, with evidence gathering in initial stages, according to Patrick McGuire, a partner at the law firm.

Several impacted women recently spoke at the Scottish Parliament about their experiences with Depo-Provera. Both Pfizer and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Agency (MHRA) emphasized ongoing monitoring of the drug’s safety, with potential regulatory actions to be considered based on new evidence.

In response to the concerns raised, Pfizer reiterated its commitment to patient safety, highlighting the extensive global monitoring and established safety profile of Depo-Provera. They encourage individuals to consult healthcare professionals if they encounter any side effects or have apprehensions about the medication.
