Andy Burnham has rejected the idea of making harsh cuts to benefits that could worsen poverty levels. The prospective Prime Minister emphasized that he would adopt a different strategy to reduce the welfare expenditure by concentrating on assisting young individuals in finding employment. He also pledged to uphold Labour’s commitments on tax policies and highlighted the necessity for Britons to have more financial relief regarding energy expenses.

This commitment to welfare comes after the previous government under Keir Starmer’s leadership faced criticism for proposing a £5 billion reduction in disability and sickness benefits, a plan that was eventually abandoned. Burnham expressed his disapproval of slashing benefit levels abruptly, as it often plunges struggling individuals into deeper poverty, leading to public backlash.

The Makerfield MP, poised to assume the role of Prime Minister soon, stressed the importance of reforming the education system to offer a balanced approach between academic and technical pathways for young people. He advocated for work placements and apprenticeships for 16 to 18-year-olds to provide clearer career options beyond traditional academic routes.

On the topic of tax policies, Burnham assured that he would adhere to Labour’s manifesto promises, avoiding increases in National Insurance, VAT, and income tax. However, he suggested revisiting business rates to potentially adjust them based on the size and nature of the companies, aiming to alleviate the burden on smaller businesses while ensuring fairness in the taxation system.

Furthermore, Burnham addressed the issue of high energy costs affecting both individuals and businesses, outlining his plans to promote public control over essential services like water, energy, and transport to lower bills gradually and provide economic relief to households and enterprises.

In terms of parliamentary dynamics, Burnham highlighted the need for a cultural shift within Westminster, emphasizing the importance of fostering a sense of teamwork and empowering MPs to contribute meaningfully without fear of reprisal. He critiqued the use of the whip to discipline MPs for voting based on their conscience, advocating for a more inclusive and collaborative approach in government affairs.

Regarding his future cabinet appointments, Burnham dismissed rumors about his choice for Chancellor, emphasizing his focus on outlining a new national direction before finalizing key personnel decisions. He underscored the significance of prioritizing policy direction over personal speculations within political circles for the betterment of the country.
