A 19-year-old Islamic extremist, Muhammad Billal, has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison for confessing to plotting a terrorist attack involving a firearm and attempting to journey to a training camp in Somalia. Billal, hailing from Nelson, Lancashire, was apprehended in November 2024 at Manchester airport while trying to board a flight to Dubai. Subsequently, in February of the following year, he faced charges of preparing terrorist acts and gathering information likely to be used for terrorism.

After pleading guilty almost a year earlier, Billal received a 13-and-a-half-year custodial sentence with an additional five-year license period at the Old Bailey, presided over by Mrs. Justice Cheema-Grubb. During the sentencing, Judge Cheema-Grubb highlighted Billal’s intent to harm civilians and his desire to be killed by law enforcement, emphasizing the uncertainty of whether he would have proceeded with the attack.

Evidence presented in court revealed that Billal extensively engaged with Islamic State (IS) material, expressing support for the organization and actively seeking information on joining IS. His terror plans involved researching nearby shooting ranges, acquiring a gun via the dark web, and scouting potential attack sites such as churches, synagogues, busy train stations, and Manchester United’s stadium.

Billal took steps to travel to Somalia between October and November 2024, seeking advice on leaving the UK discreetly, changing his appearance, and obtaining necessary supplies and tickets. While his defense argued his vulnerability and alleged brainwashing as a teenager, the court accepted Billal’s motivation rooted in IS ideology and a quest for martyrdom.

Despite showing signs of moving away from extremist views while in prison, Billal was deemed a high risk for future terrorist-related offenses. Notably, a picture of an IS flag was discovered in his cell in April the previous year. Billal confessed to all six charges in July of that year.

This breaking news highlights the severity of the case involving Muhammad Billal, underscoring the ongoing threat of radicalization and extremist activities.
