More than 300 individuals have been apprehended in a significant crackdown on organized criminal activities, resulting in the confiscation of drugs, cigarettes, and other illicit items, as well as the seizure of £1 million in cash by law enforcement authorities.

According to the National Police Chiefs’ Council, out of the 362 arrests made over a five-day period, 57 of the detainees were migrants who had recently entered the UK by crossing the Channel via boat.

The extensive operation conducted between June 15 and June 20 also led to the recovery of over £1 million in cash, illegal tobacco products, vapes, and cigarettes valued at more than £700,000, along with 92 vehicles, and 31 e-bikes. Additionally, approximately £131,000 worth of narcotics were confiscated, as reported by the NPCC.

The enforcement actions were primarily aimed at combatting organized immigration-related crimes at various establishments such as barber shops, vape shops, car washes, food production facilities, and nail salons. These types of businesses are often targeted by criminal syndicates for concealing illegal activities, exploiting vulnerable migrants, and laundering illicit funds, according to the NPCC.

The operation involved the collaboration of 39 police forces nationwide and agencies including the Home Office, Immigration Enforcement, and Trading Standards.

DCC Wendy Gunney, the lead of the organized immigration crime domestic taskforce, emphasized the collective efforts of law enforcement and the Home Office in targeting businesses involved in money laundering, drug trafficking, modern slavery, and human trafficking. Gunney highlighted that this joint initiative sends a strong message to criminal organizations that authorities are united in combating illicit activities within communities and holding offenders accountable.

Gunney also mentioned the consideration of imposing civil penalties on business owners and individuals associated with the illegal employment of migrants, underscoring a zero-tolerance approach towards exploitation in the UK.

Alex Norris, the minister for border security and asylum, commended the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies, immigration enforcement, and other partners in cracking down on organized immigration crimes. Norris emphasized the government’s commitment to utilizing all available measures to disrupt criminal networks operating in public spaces.

These proactive measures align with the government’s ongoing efforts to address illegal activities, with a notable increase in illegal working visits and arrests, as well as the repatriation of nearly 70,000 individuals found to be residing unlawfully in the UK since taking office.
