A unique weather event is predicted to occur during the current heatwave, leading to the accumulation of dust on cars and windows. Meteorologists anticipate the occurrence of “blood rain” over the weekend, particularly in the South of England, as elevated levels of dust particles are carried into the region by the Saharan plume. This dust, when mixed with precipitation, will result in a hazy coating on the ground, residential properties, and vehicles.

Senior meteorologist Jim Dale from British Weather Services explained that as a cold front moves in, showers and thunderstorms will follow, carrying sand particles from high altitudes. This sand, originating from the Sahara and even reaching Spain, will cause areas, mainly in the southern regions, to be covered in sand dust.

Such phenomena are rare in the UK due to the usual climate conditions, but the ongoing heatwave, driven by a “heat dome” drawing warm air from Europe and Africa, has led to soaring temperatures. The Met Office reported a peak temperature of 36C in Gosport, Hampshire. Although the high-pressure system is expected to shift eastward, a red weather warning remains in effect until Friday, prompting the closure of numerous schools, especially in south Wales and the Southwest of England.

As temperatures decrease, the UK is likely to experience rainfall, resulting in the significant presence of “blood rain.” The North of England is expected to receive the most substantial rainfall during the weekend, potentially causing dirt accumulation on cars, windows, and outdoor furniture.

While the phenomenon may require cleaning efforts, it poses no health hazards. Meteorologists often refer to it as “blood rain” due to its distinctive appearance. Lead weather presenter Stav Danaos from the BBC highlighted that the interaction of Saharan dust with rain can leave dirty residues on surfaces, particularly vehicles and windows, known as blood rain.

Parts of England and Wales are expected to be most affected by dust concentrations due to prevailing winds and high-pressure systems.
