A groundbreaking new long-haul flight is poised to claim the title of the world’s longest non-stop journey starting next year. Currently held by Singapore Airlines, the record for the longest nonstop flight stands at 19 hours, traveling from Singapore to New York.

However, this record is set to be surpassed soon, as Qantas is gearing up to introduce a new non-stop route in 2027. The planned flight will connect Sydney, Australia, and London without the need for refueling, thanks to a massive 20,000-liter fuel tank. Covering a distance of 10,573 miles, this flight has been dubbed by Qantas as “the final frontier of long-haul travel.”

Renowned travel expert Simon Calder recently shared insights about this remarkable flight, which will be operated using a specially modified Airbus A350 Twin Jet. The flight is scheduled to commence in October 2027, offering nonstop service from London Heathrow to Sydney, a journey lasting over 20 hours – a feat unprecedented in the airline industry.

Traditionally, passengers traveling to Australia often endure layovers in the Middle East, but there is a growing demand for direct long-haul flights. Qantas anticipates a receptive “premium customer base” willing to pay a 20% premium for a one-stop flight directly to Sydney, bypassing the inconvenience of layovers in major hubs like Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, or Abu Dhabi.

Addressing concerns about fuel price fluctuations, Qantas remains confident in the steady demand for direct flights to Australia, negating the need for stopovers in the Middle East. To enhance passenger comfort during the extended flight duration, Qantas is implementing adjustments to the aircraft, including reducing the passenger capacity to 238, nearly 100 fewer than British Airways and Virgin Atlantic on comparable routes.

Initially, the record-breaking flight was planned to depart from New York instead of London, but New York will soon have its own direct flight, offering a slightly shorter travel time.
