The largest cannabis seizure by the Border Force occurred at Southampton Port, where 12 tonnes of cannabis valued at approximately £139 million were confiscated. The drugs were discovered in 1,200 boxes within two shipping containers that had originated from Canada. Home Office officials collaborated with Canadian authorities and UK law enforcement to pinpoint the containers en route to Southampton.

On May 6, the interception of the shipment took place, marking the most substantial Border Force cannabis seizure to date, surpassing the previous record set in 2017 by four tonnes. Migration minister Mike Tapp commended the Border Force officers for their exceptional work, emphasizing the government’s commitment to preventing criminal organizations from profiting from illegal activities.

In response to the seizure, three individuals were arrested by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit on suspicion of involvement in facilitating the importation of the illegal substances. The Home Office underscored the importance of cooperation with domestic and international law enforcement agencies to enhance border security and ensure public safety.
