Upon my recent trip to Washington DC, I felt a sense of satisfaction that I wouldn’t need to focus on the Makerfield by-election unlike my colleagues. However, my contentment was short-lived as I discovered that Reform UK’s Home Affairs spokesman, Zia Yusuf, had already arrived ahead of me. Yusuf delivered a perplexing speech at The Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank, where he raised concerns about foreign interference in politics.
Expressing his worries to a small audience of MAGA supporters, Yusuf highlighted the dangers of foreign and dark money influencing political dynamics, citing instances of creating tensions between ICE and protesters. Interestingly, his remarks did not touch on his party leader, Nigel Farage, who is currently under scrutiny for failing to disclose a £5 million donation and facing criticism for his response to a recent tragedy.
Reports suggest that Yusuf had engaged with several Trump-aligned Senators and Members of Congress during his visit to Capitol Hill, raising questions about the influence of conspiracy theories on his perspectives.
