US President Donald Trump criticized individuals he accused of damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington DC, referring to them as “vandals” in a social media post. Trump, using his platform Truth Social, claimed that federal officers had made “multiple arrests” related to the vandalism at the historic site.
In a post on Sunday morning, Trump mentioned that more people had been arrested in connection with the damage to the Reflecting Pool. He highlighted the extent of the destruction, including a 250-foot-long gash on the structure and the pouring of corrosive chemicals into the pool.
Contractors informed Trump that the Reflecting Pool would need to be drained for restoration work, which he stated would be completed swiftly. This revelation came as part of a renovation project initiated by Trump for the nation’s 250th anniversary, which has faced setbacks. A former Olympian, David Hearn, was among those arrested for allegedly damaging the pool.
Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist, reported that he was detained by Park Police after touching a loose piece of the pool’s liner while cycling past the monument. Despite his claims of innocence, Hearn was held for nearly five hours and is scheduled to appear in court in July.
The incident involving Hearn occurred following Trump’s previous remarks about vandalism at the Reflecting Pool, where he criticized individuals for damaging the site. He also accused a journalist of attempting to scrape the pool’s surface, which led to a confrontation between the journalist and Trump.
Despite Trump’s earlier announcement of the completion of the Reflecting Pool restoration, issues with algae accumulation persisted. Efforts to combat the algae problem included the installation of “nanobubbler technology” by the US Department of the Interior, resulting in a reduction of algae by 75 percent according to Trump.
The Reflecting Pool has posed challenges for past administrations due to recurring algae accumulation, hindering its intended reflection purpose.
