Keir Starmer expressed satisfaction that his family has received justice following the conviction of two individuals for arson attacks on their properties. The perpetrators, Russian-linked Ukrainian Roman Lavrynovych, 22, and Romanian Stanislav Carpiuc, 27, were found guilty of conspiring to damage property. They were acting under the direction of a mysterious Russian-speaking figure known as El Money.

The incidents involved the torching of a Toyota Rav4, previously owned by Mr. Starmer, in Kentish Town, London, followed by the setting ablaze of two residential properties, one of which is still owned by the PM’s sister-in-law. Mr. Starmer, speaking at the G7 summit, acknowledged the severity of the attacks and expressed relief that justice has been served for his family.

The Labour leader emphasized the broader international context, highlighting the unity within the G7 regarding the situation in Ukraine and the impact of sanctions on Russia. In response to the attacks, Mr. Starmer announced 70 new sanctions targeting various aspects of Russia’s operations to disrupt the Kremlin’s activities.

The arson attacks were orchestrated by El Money through the Telegram messaging service. Lavrynovych was promised £3,000 in cryptocurrency to film the blazes and gain media coverage. The attacks, carried out in the dead of night while residents were asleep, posed a significant threat to lives and instilled fear in the affected households.

After a trial, Lavrynovych was convicted of damaging properties by fire, while a third defendant was cleared of conspiracy charges. The defendants were remanded in custody pending sentencing. Counter Terrorism Policing London confirmed that there was no indication of a state-level threat behind the attacks, but rather a motive to cause disruption and fear in the community.

A Government spokesperson condemned the attacks as abhorrent and praised law enforcement and the Crown Prosecution Service for bringing the perpetrators to justice.
