A police sergeant named Paul Street is currently facing trial at the Old Bailey for various alleged offenses while serving at Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Street, described as a “maverick” officer, is accused of creating a toxic work environment within his team through WhatsApp communications.

The court heard that Street’s aggressive approach in leading his team at Cambourne Police Station, focusing on tackling serious crimes like county lines drug supply, yielded significant results. However, anti-corruption officers intervened in 2021, seizing Street’s phones and revealing two WhatsApp groups that showcased a culture of boasting and intolerance towards suspects.

Prosecutor Anne Whyte KC stated that Street fostered a culture of bullying and disrespect towards suspects and team members who disagreed with his methods. WhatsApp chats revealed derogatory comments about fellow officers, with Street allegedly assaulting a suspect in 2020 and sharing a photo of the incident in a group chat.

Street’s behavior extended to encouraging bullying of a teen suspect in custody and requesting inappropriate content from a female suspect’s phone. The court also heard that Street’s actions led to a colleague sharing intimate photos of the female suspect, with Street showing a disregard for professional conduct.

Despite his claims of self-defense and reassurance-seeking motives, Street’s conduct was deemed inappropriate and outside the scope of his duties. The prosecutor emphasized that Street’s actions undermined public trust in the police and mirrored the behavior he condemned in criminals.

Street, a resident of Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, has denied the charges against him, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, perverting the course of justice, and misconduct in public office. The trial at the Old Bailey is ongoing.
