The National Crime Agency (NCA) has reported that the captain of a Russian shadow fleet vessel intercepted by British troops is facing charges for violating sanctions.

Ajay Pant, a 38-year-old Indian national, has been accused of breaching Section 46Z9B of the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019. The NCA confirmed that Pant allegedly engaged in the supply or delivery of prohibited oil or oil products from Russia to a third country by ship in June 2026.

The tanker Smyrtos was seized in the Channel by Royal Marine commandos and NCA officers in an operation led by the UK. This marks the first time a sanctioned vessel has been captured under UK authority.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander issued an official order on Monday to prevent the ship from leaving UK waters.

Pant is scheduled to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, while the 24 crew members, hailing from Georgia and India, are still onboard the vessel, currently anchored off Weymouth in Dorset.

According to the 2019 regulations, individuals convicted of trade offenses like the one Pant is accused of could face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine, or both.

In his inaugural statement as Defence Secretary, Dan Jarvis emphasized that the UK’s interdiction of the vessel is a significant setback for Russian President Putin. Jarvis stated to MPs that while the UK aims to avoid escalation, it will always enforce sanctions when necessary.

He highlighted that the UK has sanctioned more than 550 Russian shadow fleet vessels, leading to tangible consequences. Nearly 200 vessels have been compelled to anchor due to UK and partner actions. Jarvis underscored that the recent operation sends a clear message to Russia that the UK and its allies are prepared to counter the Russian military threat.

During his address, Jarvis was accompanied by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, whom he praised for her dedication to national security and support in this matter.
