The anguish experienced by Michael Swift and Suzie Gough is beyond comprehension. Their beloved son Mackenzie tragically drowned in a river during the recent heatwave when he was just 11 years old. Today, they have gathered the strength to share their story, hoping to prevent another family from enduring the same devastating loss. Their message carries immense significance.

While open water may appear tranquil and appealing, especially to children on sweltering summer days, the truth is that it can be perilous. This is why the Save Lives for Sam campaign, championed by Michael and Suzie, holds such significance. Named after teenager Sam Haycock, who also lost his life in open water, the campaign calls for urgent action to prevent more young lives from being cut short.

Tragically, a total of 19 individuals, including 13 children, lost their lives in open water during the final week of May alone. This is an unacceptable toll that demands change. Enhanced education, clearer warnings, and a nationwide water safety initiative are essential to saving lives.

Amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine led by Vladimir Putin, his associates attempted to illicitly transfer illicit funds through British waters. However, the UK made a resolute statement yesterday that such actions will not go unchecked.

The recent incident of Royal Marines boarding a sanctioned tanker in the English Channel served as a stark reminder that sanctions must be rigorously enforced to have real impact. For years, Russia has been funneling oil profits through covert means, but Britain has now signaled the end of this illicit practice.

The majority of parents, nine out of ten, are demanding decisive action, as are bereaved families. Today, the government is anticipated to take action by implementing a ban on under-16s accessing social media platforms. The tech giants have been given ample opportunity to address their shortcomings but have prioritized profits over safeguarding users.

The time for change is now.
