A tragic incident unfolded at the Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir in Colombia as a 22-year-old individual lost his life after allegedly being pushed off a boat during a confrontation. The victim, identified as Alexander Avendaño Varela, was part of a group of young partygoers aboard a party boat when a dispute escalated into a distressing scenario. Video footage captured the chaotic scene where Alexander was seen on the edge of the boat, stripped of some of his clothing, before a scuffle ensued, leading to his fall into the water.

Despite the visible struggle of Alexander in the water, no immediate rescue attempts were made by those onboard the boat, which continued its course. Following the incident, a search operation involving 14 divers was initiated, but challenging conditions impeded the efforts, resulting in the recovery of Alexander’s body several days later.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, particularly to ascertain potential criminal liabilities. Concerns arose as some individuals in the footage were heard making disturbing remarks about Alexander’s inability to swim, further exacerbating the situation. Notably, none of the individuals on the boat were observed wearing life jackets, disregarding safety regulations mandated for tourist boats in the region due to previous drowning incidents.

The Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir, a prominent tourist spot in Colombia spanning over 2,262 hectares and reaching depths of 45 meters, has witnessed numerous drowning incidents over the years, leading to swimming prohibitions. As the investigation continues, testimonies from witnesses present at the party are being collected to shed light on the events that transpired.
