“7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Philippines, Tsunami Warning Issued”

Videos capturing buildings collapsing and residents screaming in fear during a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines have circulated on social media today.

Following a significant earthquake near Mindanao, the Philippines, a tsunami warning has been issued for the country. The earthquake, estimated at magnitude 7.8, rattled Davao City around 7:40 am local time on Monday, June 8, 2026. Witnesses reported intense shaking, prompting evacuations as a safety measure.

Tsunami alerts have also been raised for various regions, including the Philippines, the west coast of the United States, Indonesia, Palau, Yap, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea. Meanwhile, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has lifted its tsunami watch for the nation and its territories, following an update from the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) at 10:38 am AEST.

The BoM confirmed, “A 7.8 magnitude undersea earthquake occurred near Mindanao, Philippines, at 9:37 am AEST on Monday, June 8, 2026. No tsunami threats have been detected for Australia’s mainland, islands, or territories.” The cancellation notice stated, “THE TSUNAMI WATCH FOR AUSTRALIA IS CANCELLED. No further updates will be provided unless the situation changes.”
