In February 2019, Wolfgang Douglas was alarmed when his father, Albert Douglas, finally reached out after a 10-day silence, recounting his distressing ordeal of being apprehended while attempting to escape Dubai. Albert, a 63-year-old businessman, narrated his harrowing experience of being seized by UAE guards near the Oman border, taken to an undisclosed location with a hood over his head. His troubles stemmed from being falsely accused of debts accrued by a family member’s company without his involvement.

Before his escape bid, Albert endured daily blackmail and financial hardship for two years, allegedly due to undue pressure from connections exerting influence to frame him with false charges. Fearing a biased legal system, Albert made a desperate attempt to flee to Oman while on bail, only to face capture, leading to days of torture in inhumane conditions.

Subsequently, Albert endured a five-year unjust imprisonment for a debt he did not owe, facing appalling conditions in UAE prisons, including Al Ain and Al-Awir, where he witnessed severe abuse and violence among inmates. Despite being exonerated by the UN, Albert’s traumatic experience resurfaced when Lee Andrews, Katie Price’s husband, was accused of fabricating a similar story.

Katie Price recently shared on Instagram how Lee was seemingly abducted, a claim later revealed to be a misunderstanding as he was under local custody for a private civil matter. Lee’s release has been delayed due to monetary obligations, contrasting with Albert’s ordeal where he faced brutality and deprivation during his captivity until his eventual return home.

Wolfgang, still haunted by the distressing episode, highlighted the prevalence of financial entrapment cases in Dubai, where individuals face severe consequences for debts and disputes. He criticized Lee for allegedly exploiting his father’s ordeal for personal gain, emphasizing the need for awareness and advocacy against such injustices.

As a proponent of the Romani-Gypsy Movement, Wolfgang highlighted the challenges faced by ethnic minorities in Dubai, where financial disputes can escalate into criminal cases with dire consequences. He underscored the lack of human rights and free speech in the UAE, citing instances of abuse and coercion within the legal system.

Wolfgang and Albert’s battle for justice involved significant legal expenses and efforts to prove their innocence, culminating in exonerations by international human rights bodies. Wolfgang condemned the system’s bias and the challenges faced by expatriates and entrepreneurs in Dubai’s volatile economic climate, urging caution and awareness among foreign residents.

The ongoing economic turmoil and geopolitical conflicts have heightened the vulnerability of expatriates in Dubai, with Wolfgang warning of potential traps and risks faced by those entangled in financial disputes. He emphasized the need for caution and vigilance in navigating Dubai’s legal landscape to avoid falling victim to financial entrapment tactics.
