Medical experts are lauding the remarkable efficacy of a new treatment that successfully eliminated entire tumors in cases of cancer that had previously shown resistance to conventional therapies. The treatment led to a 42% reduction in tumor size for patients participating in an international study conducted by the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London.

Carl Walsh, who battled severe tongue cancer, endured a challenging diet consisting mainly of soft foods like soup, rice pudding, and tinned ravioli, along with three prescribed nutritional milk drinks daily. The 56-year-old faced difficulties in speaking and eating due to swelling and pain, resulting in significant weight loss.

Carl was one of 102 individuals with head and neck cancer enrolled in a trial at The Royal Marsden hospital in London, testing a promising triple-action cancer injection. The researchers celebrated unprecedented outcomes, including cases where the tumors completely disappeared post-treatment.

The medication, amivantamab, is administered every three weeks and targets a crucial protein known as EGFR, essential for cancer growth, while also inhibiting the MET pathway that tumor cells exploit to resist treatment. Additionally, the drug activates the immune system to combat the cancer cells.

Following an unsuccessful treatment with chemotherapy and immunotherapy, Carl was recommended for the OrigAMI-4 trial, which proved to be transformative. He noticed improvements in his diet after only two cycles of treatment, gradually returning to a normal diet after six months.

“The moment I savored the most was enjoying a hearty steak. My speech has fully recovered, and I can now speak effortlessly at work with headsets,” expressed Carl, who is currently undergoing his seventeenth treatment cycle. He highlighted significant reductions in swelling and remarkable pain alleviation since starting the treatment.

The trial, led by scientists at The Institute of Cancer Research in London and conducted across 55 hospitals in 11 countries, targeted patients with advanced head and neck cancer resistant to standard treatments like immunotherapy and chemotherapy, particularly those unrelated to HPV infection.

Forty-two percent of patients receiving amivantamab, totaling 43 individuals, experienced tumor shrinkage, with 15 patients witnessing complete tumor disappearance. Despite typically facing a bleak prognosis after conventional treatments fail, patients on the drug survived an average of 12.5 months post-treatment initiation.

Professor Kevin Harrington, an expert in biological cancer therapies at The ICR and a consultant at The Royal Marsden, emphasized the unprecedentedly positive responses observed in patients who had developed resistance to traditional cancer treatments. The treatment’s potential to benefit a substantial number of patients annually in the UK and Europe is promising.

With approximately 12,800 new head and neck cancer cases diagnosed annually in the UK, amivantamab has already secured NHS approval for specific non-small-cell lung cancer patients. Manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, the medication is undergoing evaluation in around 60 global clinical trials, focusing primarily on lung cancer while exploring treatments for colorectal, brain, and gastric cancers.

ICR chief executive Professor Kristian Helin highlighted the study’s significance in showcasing how rigorous cancer research can lead to meaningful advancements, especially for patients with limited treatment options. The study unveiling took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual conference in Chicago.
