Donald Trump faces setback as court orders removal of his name from the Kennedy Center, a prominent arts venue in Washington DC. A federal judge ruled that Trump’s name was unlawfully added to the center and prohibited its closure for renovations. Trump, who had sought to rename the venue after himself in exchange for funding, expressed disappointment at the ruling, hinting at withdrawing renovation plans and funding. The Kennedy Center’s board, influenced by Trump’s allies, had approved the name change to ‘Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts’ in late 2025.

In response, Trump indicated his disinterest in further involvement unless allowed to lead renovations. The Kennedy Center’s Vice President of Public Relations mentioned reviewing the decision and expressed confidence in appealing to acknowledge Trump’s contributions. Trump had planned extensive renovations to address structural issues but also faced criticism for influencing the venue’s events with conservative backlash over perceived liberal programming choices.

Trump had utilized the venue for various events aligned with his administration’s agenda, including hosting the FIFA World Cup draw, screening a documentary about Melania Trump, and organizing the CPAC’s ‘Christian Persecution Summit’. The ongoing legal battle over the center’s name and operations reflects Trump’s attempt to leave a lasting mark on Washington’s cultural landscape.
