A remarkable heatwave in the UK is expected to come to an end this weekend, giving way to widespread rain and thunderstorms. On Saturday, parts of England and Wales may see temperatures reaching 29C alongside sunny conditions, but Northern Ireland and western Scotland are likely to experience a wetter start to the weekend. By Sunday, rain is forecasted across most regions, with temperatures around 19C. The Met Office anticipates a gradual decrease in the ongoing heatwave, transitioning to cooler, unsettled weather by the weekend.
Chief Forecaster Chris Bulmer stated that the hot weather is beginning to dissipate, with fresher conditions moving in as a cold front advances southeastward across the UK. Showers and thunderstorms may occur as the heat recedes, bringing temperatures closer to seasonal averages over the weekend. The UK recently broke its May maximum temperature record, hitting 35.1C in London. Tragically, several fatalities, including young individuals, have been reported during the heatwave, emphasizing the importance of water safety.
Experts, including Ashley Jones from the Royal Life Saving Society UK, urge caution when entering open water, highlighting the dangers of cold water shock. Swim England’s Helen Marney emphasized the risks associated with open water activities, especially during hot weather, and advocated for using managed or lifeguarded sites for safer experiences. Swim England also encourages prioritizing swimming lessons and water safety awareness for children to prevent future tragedies.
