Authorities are in a rush to evacuate 40,000 individuals due to a significant storage tank leak of a hazardous chemical that poses a potential explosion threat.

The tank, containing up to 26,500 liters of methyl methacrylate utilized in plastic parts production, experienced overheating on Thursday, resulting in the release of vapors. Officials are working urgently to prevent the tank, which holds a highly volatile substance, from exploding and causing a major industrial incident.

The incident occurred at a facility in Garden Grove, California, situated approximately 30 miles from Los Angeles. Local fire authorities have issued warnings that the tank could rupture, spilling the chemical or exploding, leading to severe damage to the vicinity.

Craig Covey, Division Chief of the Orange County Fire Authority, stated on Friday, “This situation is critical, and we are uncertain about when it might fail. We are making every effort to determine how to prevent a disaster.”

Residents in Garden Grove have been compelled to evacuate their homes following official orders. The evacuation zone was expanded on Friday to encompass residents in five other cities within Orange County, California: Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster.

Efforts to stop the leakage from the tank at GKN Aerospace, a company producing parts for commercial and military aircraft, have been unsuccessful. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported, according to authorities.

In a subsequent update on Friday, Covey mentioned that the authorities managed to stabilize the tank’s temperature, providing time to determine a solution. The affected plant is only a short 30-minute drive from downtown Los Angeles and less than a mile from Disneyland’s theme parks, which remained unaffected by evacuation mandates on Friday.

A local resident named Danny Pham recounted being awoken by his roommate around 7 am on Friday, urging him to evacuate immediately. Pham, who resides near the plant, was unaware of the situation due to working late at a Vietnamese restaurant the previous night.

Expressing his shock, Pham stated, “I was taken aback. I had no idea of the seriousness of the situation. I never imagined such an event could occur.” Pham hastily left with only his wallet and passport, seeking refuge at a friend’s restaurant in a neighboring city.

Firefighters have established containment measures using sandbags to avert a potential chemical spill from reaching storm drains, creeks, or the nearby ocean, as confirmed by the local fire chief.

Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, the county health officer, warned that if the chemical heats up, it could emit harmful vapors causing health issues such as respiratory problems, eye irritation, nausea, and headaches.

Although crews initially succeeded in neutralizing one of the damaged tanks, Covey stressed on Friday morning that the remaining tank presented the most critical situation. Specialized hazardous materials teams from GKN Aerospace are currently evaluating the scenario.

Mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein of Garden Grove reassured locals, saying, “We understand the fear this situation brings. However, evacuation orders are in place for your safety.”
