King Charles surprised attendees at a packed theater performance when he made an unexpected appearance. The monarch’s response to the play was later disclosed.
The King received a warm reception with cheers and applause from the audience at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s staging of The Tempest at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. Seated among enthusiastic spectators, King Charles enjoyed the play on a Friday evening.
In a surprise visit, the King attended a rendition of The Tempest featuring Sir Kenneth Branagh, and the individual seated beside him shared the monarch’s impressions of the performance.
Upon arrival, the King was welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Tim Cox, in the presence of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey.
Harvey, who sat with King Charles, mentioned that he was thoroughly engaged and amused throughout the show, indicating his genuine enjoyment.
Evans noted the King’s deep interest in the theater when he recognized actor Guy Henry during the performance. The King’s enthusiasm for the craft was evident to those around him.
Excited audience members in the dress circle eagerly peered down to catch a glimpse of the King, while others in the stalls took out their phones to capture the moment.
During the intermission, the King was offered a drink before he visited the RSC’s costume department, where he admired various costumes, including a crown from a previous production.
King Charles interacted with historical costumes, such as Dame Judi Dench’s dress from a past performance and attire worn by David Tennant and Sir Antony Sher in different productions, expressing his admiration for the craftsmanship.
At the conclusion of the play, the King stood and applauded, showcasing his appreciation for the performance. King Charles has been the patron of the RSC since 2024, following the legacy of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
In a significant moment, Sir Kenneth portrayed the exiled Duke of Milan, Prospero, for the first time in his esteemed career, adding to his impressive repertoire of Shakespearean roles. The Tempest, one of Shakespeare’s final works, will run at the theater until June 20.
Evans and Harvey expressed their honor in welcoming King Charles to witness the landmark production of The Tempest, featuring Sir Kenneth Branagh’s return to Stratford-upon-Avon after over three decades and Sir Richard Eyre’s debut with the company.
