A United Airlines flight was redirected due to a mid-air crisis involving a passenger attempting to open an aircraft door. The incident occurred on a plane carrying 145 passengers and six crew members from Newark Liberty International Airport to Guatemala City. The pilot made the decision to divert the flight because of the disruptive passenger.

Upon landing safely at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia, authorities met Flight 1551. According to air traffic control recordings, a passenger tried to open a door mid-flight and subsequently assaulted another individual who intervened. The unruly passenger was subdued by crew members and other passengers until the plane landed.

Following the incident, United Airlines canceled the flight, and passengers were accommodated on a replacement flight the next morning. The airline’s statement mentioned that the disrupted flight was met by law enforcement and a new flight was arranged for the affected passengers.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the flight landed without further issues and that the disturbance was reported by the crew. The FAA clarified that it is impossible for a passenger to open a commercial airplane door at cruising altitude due to safety mechanisms in place.

Commercial airplanes are equipped with secure “plug-type” doors that prevent them from being opened mid-flight due to the difference in pressure inside and outside the cabin. The atmospheric conditions at cruising altitude make it physically impossible to open the door due to the immense pressure differential.
