Drivers are being advised to keep an essential item in their vehicles as temperatures are expected to reach 33C in some areas. The Met Office has predicted a prolonged period of high temperatures resembling a heatwave for the upcoming bank holiday weekend. The intense heat is forecasted to continue until Tuesday before gradually easing off from Wednesday onwards.

While the sunny weather may be a delightful change for many, motorists are being urged to stay cautious while driving. Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Car Leasing, highlights the potential dangers within cars during a heatwave. He recommends drivers to carry a cloth or towel to cover the metal buckles of seat belts to prevent burns caused by the scorching temperatures.

Conway emphasized the importance of keeping seat belts cool to avoid injuries, particularly for children and pets who may be more susceptible. He suggests using light-colored materials to cover the seat belt buckles and advises letting the car cool down by airing it out and running the air conditioning before embarking on a journey.

Driving in hot weather can turn a vehicle into an oven, with interiors absorbing heat from the sun and releasing it back into the cabin, creating an uncomfortable and potentially hazardous environment. Reflective window covers can help regulate interior temperatures, especially for cars with leather seats that tend to heat up quickly.

Conway also recommends turning the steering wheel to prevent direct sunlight exposure and keeping journeys brief when traveling with children or pets. Stopping for fresh air breaks and ensuring everyone stays hydrated is crucial. Additionally, he stresses never leaving a child or pet unattended in a hot car.

In case of a burn, it is essential to cool the affected area immediately with cool water and apply a clean dressing. The NHS website offers valuable information on self-treating burns and when professional medical attention is necessary.

By following these precautions and staying vigilant during the heatwave, drivers can ensure a safe and comfortable journey for themselves and their passengers.
