Israeli authorities have apprehended the sibling of the President of Ireland and have also halted one of the remaining boats from the Gaza flotilla while it was en route to Gaza. The interception of the vessel named the Andros by Israeli forces was captured on the flotilla’s website tracker, showing activists surrendering with raised arms before the livestream abruptly ended, indicating the boat’s interception.

Dr. Margaret Connolly, the sister of Catherine Connolly, was on one of the ten boats in a flotilla of 60 vessels intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters, according to The Global Sumud Flotilla. This incident occurred following a previous interception by the Israeli navy near Cyprus.

The interception is part of ongoing efforts by civil society to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza and highlight the challenging living conditions faced by Palestinians in the region. The President of Ireland expressed pride in her sister’s participation in the aid convoy to Gaza but also expressed concerns for her safety.

In a video message, Dr. Connolly confirmed her detention by Israeli forces and emphasized the humanitarian mission of the flotilla to deliver aid and medical supplies to Gaza. She urged support for her imprisoned colleagues and called on the Irish government to take action regarding the Occupied Territories Bill.

Multiple vessels set sail from Marmaris, Turkey, as the final leg of the journey to Gaza, with some boats intercepted, including the Andros, while others continued their voyage. The Global Sumud Flotilla condemned the interception as unjust and expressed worries about the safety of all participants, including the Irish contingent.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of those involved in the flotilla, with calls for international attention and support for the humanitarian mission.
