A woman, Helen Green, was recently exposed for falsely receiving £25,000 in benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions. Green, who claimed to be housebound due to severe rheumatoid arthritis, was found participating in physical activities such as a 10k race and gym classes, contradicting her claims of limited mobility. The evidence, including photos and video footage, led to her guilty plea for fraudulently obtaining £25,244. Following her admission, Green was sentenced to seven months in jail for failing to disclose changes in her circumstances to the DWP.

Despite Green’s assertions in her benefit claim that she required assistance for daily tasks due to her lifelong deteriorating condition, investigations revealed her active lifestyle, debunking her alleged limitations. The case drew criticism from Labour’s Minister for Transformation, Andrew Western, who emphasized the impact of fraudulent claims on taxpayers and genuine beneficiaries of the Personal Independence Payment.

Mandy Tobias of the Crown Prosecution Service highlighted Green’s deception for financial gain and commended the DWP’s thorough investigation that led to her conviction. The case serves as a reminder that dishonesty in benefit claims will be uncovered, as emphasized by the authorities involved in exposing Green’s fraudulent actions.
