An exceptional mansion has been listed on the market for free, but acquiring it comes with a unique condition. Situated in Massachusetts and valued at approximately $3 million or £2.2 million, this property on Nantucket, famously known as Billionaires’ Island, is available at no cost. However, the catch is that the potential buyer must relocate the house off the land due to the island’s Demolition Delay Bylaw program, a strategic initiative set for 2024 that encourages relocating homes instead of demolishing them.
If someone secures ownership of the property, they must transport the building to a new location within 180 days. Originally, the owner, Dean Lampe, had listed the home for millions but had to give it away under mounting pressure. As a result, the three-bedroom, two-bathroom house spanning 1,736 square feet is now up for grabs at no charge.
Fortunately, for those without available land, the houses can be temporarily placed in a “crib,” essentially a suspended building held by a crane until a permanent location is secured. House relocations must occur between mid-September and June 15 to avoid the summer tourist influx on the island.
Local real estate agent Shelly Lockwood of Pepper Frazier Real Estate emphasized the value of preserving these homes rather than disposing of them in a landfill, considering the scarcity of land on the island. The escalating land prices have made unwanted houses a sought-after commodity, with many eager to acquire them for the valuable land they occupy.
While the concept of moving entire properties may seem unconventional, it has become a customary practice on the island as residents grapple with rising expenses. However, relocating a sizeable home is a complex endeavor, as highlighted by Carl Jelleme of Toscana Corp, a company with extensive experience in moving homes on Nantucket. Various factors such as road width, trees, utility lines, and neighboring structures come into play when relocating a building, making it a challenging and costly process.
