Hospital staff are facing criticism for inappropriately accessing the medical records of Southport attack victims. The tragic incident, which took place at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event on July 29, 2024, resulted in the deaths of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, with ten others sustaining serious injuries from the assailant, Axel Rudakubana. Following an access audit by University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, it was revealed that 48 staff members had accessed patient records without valid reasons, a fact that was disclosed to the affected patients only recently.

One survivor of the attack, dance teacher Leanne Lucas, expressed shock and dismay at the breach of her privacy, calling it an “attempted cover-up.” She emphasized the betrayal felt by victims who had endured immense trauma, stating that the staff members who accessed their records had abused their positions of trust. The trust has refuted claims of a cover-up, citing a change in leadership’s decision not to inform the patients to prevent retraumatization.

Legal Director Nicola Brook condemned the privacy breach, noting the severity of unauthorized access by multiple staff members. The Trust’s response to the incident, including disciplinary actions against the involved employees, has sparked outrage and demands for accountability. The trust has taken steps to address the issue, including implementing digital solutions to prevent future breaches.

The breach of patient confidentiality at Liverpool Hospitals echoes a similar incident at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust, underscoring the need for stricter data protection measures. The trust has apologized for the distress caused to the victims and assured transparency in reporting the incident to relevant authorities. While the Information Commissioner’s Office has been notified, no independent investigation has been initiated, with the watchdog indicating satisfaction that no data protection laws were violated unlawfully.
