A grieving family has honored the memory of a man described as “affectionate and kind” who tragically lost his life following an incident at a nightclub in Birmingham.
Berhane Tsegay was pushed down a staircase at the Sebene Habesha club in Birmingham on September 26, 2025, resulting in severe head injuries that ultimately led to his passing three days later.
In a heartfelt tribute, his family expressed the profound impact of his untimely death on them and the broader community, struggling to articulate the depth of their sorrow and ongoing anguish.
Describing Berhane as a compassionate and humble individual of unwavering integrity, they highlighted his dedication to personal growth and family support, noting his hard work ethic and potential to make positive contributions to society.
Security footage from the club captured Simon Gebrengus forcefully pushing Berhane down the stairs, causing the fatal injury. Gebrengus, aged 44, was swiftly apprehended by West Midlands Police and subsequently pleaded guilty to manslaughter, receiving a six-year prison sentence.
Another individual, Bibi Gilzgi, admitted to involvement in the incident, though contests the charge of murder. His trial is scheduled to commence early next year.
The family further shared Berhane’s strong faith, highlighting his role as a Deacon in Eritrea and the United Kingdom, where he was esteemed for his commitment and character.
