The upcoming World Cup is set to have the largest security operation ever seen in the sport’s history, given the increased number of teams and fans. FBI officials have collaborated with FIFA to plan the security measures for the tournament, involving various law enforcement agencies and a newly formed White House Task Force led by President Trump.

A recent assassination attempt on the President has underscored the accessibility of firearms in the United States, where about 32% of adults own guns and nearly 44% reside in households with firearms. Estimates indicate that there are over 393 million privately owned firearms in the country, possessed by approximately 65 to 77 million individuals.

The surge in gun ownership, rising by 28% from 1994 to 2023, has raised concerns due to the escalation in gun-related fatalities, with 44,000 recorded in 2024, predominantly homicides. Despite opposition, President Trump’s administration has pushed for further relaxation of gun laws, despite recent controversial incidents involving ICE agents.

As the World Cup approaches, security measures are being intensified. With an expected seven million fans attending, stringent security checks will be enforced, including a ban on large bags at all venues across the US. The expansion to 48 teams has increased the number of games to 104, to be played in 16 host cities spanning the US, Mexico, and Canada.

In an unprecedented move, FIFA will be assisting US authorities in managing security during the tournament, deviating from the traditional local authorities’ role. Recent events, such as the assassination attempts on President Trump, have highlighted the need for robust security planning.

The Department of Homeland Security has allocated substantial funding to host cities for the implementation of counter-drone technology to safeguard against potential aerial threats around the tournament venues. This investment aims to outpace evolving threats and ensure the safety of participants and spectators during the FIFA 2026 World Cup.

The UK policing operation for the World Cup will be overseen by Cheshire Chief Constable Mark Roberts, who will collaborate with US authorities to share critical intelligence and enhance security measures since the previous tournament in Qatar. The enforcement of football banning orders has proven effective in curbing hooliganism abroad, with UK nationals exhibiting commendable behavior in past tournaments.

While preparations for the World Cup are well underway, concerns have been raised regarding discriminatory immigration policies and the involvement of ICE in security operations. Efforts are being made to address these issues and ensure a safe and successful tournament for all participants and attendees.
