An individual hailing from Northern Ireland has been apprehended on suspicion of misappropriating over £850,000 from the Australian magnate Judith Neilson. Annalouise Spence, 51 years old and a resident of County Antrim, served as the wealthy philanthropist’s personal secretary. She was denied bail on Friday, May 8, at her court hearing in Sydney, where she faced numerous charges related to the unauthorized utilization of Neilson’s finances over several years.

Per The Irish Times, it is alleged that Spence funded her own 50th birthday bash at a luxurious Sydney hotel using embezzled funds, with Neilson in attendance. She purportedly splurged on custom-made napkins, high-end shoes, and a formal gown. Moreover, Spence is accused of lavishly spending on trips to the United States, personalized diamond and gold jewelry, and upscale clothing. She is also alleged to have purchased fine art, chauffeured transportation, premium mattress toppers, and Cartier jewelry items.

Spence is thought to have served as Neilson’s personal assistant for a span of eight years. Her suspected fraudulent activities came to light when another staff member, while reconciling Neilson’s financial records, identified a charge of AUS$59,000 (£43,000) for a pink-gold Rolex watch obtained from a dealer in London, as reported by Belfast Live.

Judith Neilson is a prominent figure on Australia’s affluent roster, with an estimated net worth of nearly $1.5 billion. She founded the Judith Neilson Institute eight years ago with an initial endowment of $100 million to advocate for journalism and storytelling in Australia.
