Millions of voters are expected to participate in crucial local elections across England today, where presenting a photo ID is mandatory. A total of 5,013 council seats are up for grabs, with elections taking place in 134 out of the country’s 317 councils. This includes various London boroughs, county councils, and unitary authorities, such as the recently established East Surrey and West Surrey.
The Labour Party will be defending 2,557 seats, while the Conservatives have 1,362 seats at stake, and the Liberal Democrats have 684. Additionally, there are 410 seats held by other parties, including independents. Polling stations opened at 7 am and will remain accessible until 10 pm.
While voters in Wales and Scotland are also participating in parliamentary elections, they are not required to provide photo identification. However, English voters must display a valid photo ID at the polling stations before receiving their ballot papers. It is essential to note that carrying a polling card is not mandatory; voters can proceed directly to their designated polling station to cast their votes.
The requirement for voter ID was introduced by Boris Johnson during his tenure as Prime Minister, sparking criticism due to concerns that many individuals could be disenfranchised if they lacked ID or forgot to bring it. To assist voters, the Electoral Commission has compiled a list of approved IDs to facilitate the voting process.
Niki Nixon, the Director of Communications and External Affairs, emphasized the necessity of bringing photo ID for the English local and mayoral elections. She advised voters not to risk being turned away by ensuring they have the required ID before heading to the polling station. In case of ID unavailability or non-receipt of the Voter Authority Certificate, voters can appoint an emergency proxy to vote on their behalf. This arrangement must be made with the council before 5 pm on election day, and the appointed proxy must possess valid photo ID.
