“From Struggle to Success: Overcoming Obesity with Lifestyle Changes”

I have struggled with being overweight for most of my life. It wasn’t until a conversation with my doctor prompted me to make significant changes that I realized I didn’t have to accept that as my permanent reality. Previously, I had attempted various diets without success, lacking the mental strength and disliking physical exercise, while my favorite meals were typically high in carbs and cheese. This pattern often led to feelings of failure and reverting to unhealthy eating habits.

In 2022, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder affecting insulin levels, prompting the NHS recommendation for weight loss to alleviate symptoms. Despite briefly adhering to a diet plan, my old eating habits resurfaced, culminating in a call from my doctor in August 2025, indicating that my high BMI precluded me from receiving the combined contraceptive pill due to estrogen requirements.

At my heaviest weight of 106.7kg (16st 12lb), I realized the urgency to address my weight concerns. Following my GP’s advice, I enrolled in a 12-week online weight loss program. Currently, after approximately nine months, I weigh 87kg (13st 9lb), the lightest I have been as an adult. While still categorized as medically obese, I continue to strive for further weight reduction, viewing my dietary adjustments as a sustainable lifestyle change rather than a temporary fix.

Tailoring my diet to manage my PCOS and insulin resistance, I prioritize whole grains over refined carbohydrates and balance my meals with proteins and vegetables. Emphasizing the importance of proteins, I incorporate carbohydrates moderately and avoid calorie counting, preferring a flexible approach to tracking my food intake. Additionally, I have incorporated physical activity into my routine, transitioning from sedentary behaviors to engaging in regular walks, aerobics classes, and kettlebell workouts, finding enjoyment and variety through online resources like YouTube.

Previously reliant on sugary drinks, I have transitioned to consuming sugar-free alternatives and flavored water using natural additives like Waterdrop cubes. By allowing occasional indulgences and refraining from self-punishment for dietary slip-ups, I promote a balanced approach to healthy eating. Recognizing the significance of enjoying life while maintaining consistency in my health journey, I aim to inspire others navigating similar paths towards wellness.
