A woman who referred to herself as a “tornado” was imprisoned for pushing a burning wheelie bin towards law enforcement during a riot, has shared her story following a significant transformation in her life.

Stacey Vint, aged 34, was among the initial individuals to be sentenced after the unrest that ensued post the tragic Southport incident. Videos capturing her collapsing while propelling the flaming bin in Middlesborough went viral, leading to her receiving a 20-month prison term for violent disorder upon pleading guilty.

After her incarceration, the mother-of-five revealed that her time in prison allowed her to reflect on her actions and address her substance abuse problems. Recounting her past struggles with addiction, homelessness, and turmoil before August 2024, Stacey described herself as a destructive force, causing chaos without concern for the consequences.

During her chaotic lifestyle, Stacey lost custody of her children and lived in unstable conditions as long as she had access to alcohol and drugs. She admitted to using substances to numb her emotions and escape reality, leading to her involvement in the riot while under the influence.

Reflecting on her time in prison, Stacey acknowledged the impact of her actions on the community, expressing remorse for the fear and destruction she caused. Recognized by a former teacher from her childhood, Stacey engaged in a restorative justice program upon her release, aiming to make amends and take responsibility for her role in the unrest.

Through the program, Stacey reunited with her teacher, Satti, after over 25 years, fostering a journey of redemption and reconciliation. The pair has since collaborated in various community initiatives, including educational sessions on crime prevention, substance abuse awareness, and the consequences of civil unrest.

Their involvement in a community event organized by the Amal Project highlighted their transformation and commitment to community service. The success story of Stacey’s rehabilitation has been documented in a short film titled “Riot to Redemption,” showcasing the impact of restorative justice in her life.

Restorative Cleveland, supported by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, continues to promote initiatives that facilitate healing and reconciliation between offenders and victims. Stacey’s journey serves as a testament to the positive outcomes achievable through restorative justice programs.
