Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the White House on the first day of their state visit. The US president quickly disregarded royal protocol by initiating physical contact upon their arrival. Following a warm reception on the South Lawn, where greetings and photos were exchanged, Trump tapped the King on the shoulder as they headed inside for a garden party.
This breach of protocol, a subtle gesture that seemed more political than personal, was noticed by body language expert Judi James. Despite the breach, King Charles appeared unfazed, displaying a more relaxed attitude compared to his mother Queen Elizabeth II. The interaction between Trump and the King was described as businesslike, while Melania’s welcoming cheek kisses added a friendly and familial touch.
This incident is not the first time Trump has flouted royal customs during encounters with British monarchs. Previous instances include turning his back on the Queen and grabbing Charles above the elbow. Despite recent security concerns at the White House, the state visit proceeded as planned with a busy itinerary. Charles is scheduled to address Congress on Tuesday, following in his mother’s footsteps from 1991.
