“Green Party MP Raises Concerns Over Alcohol at Work”

Have you ever considered drinking alcohol while working late? Or do you, like many others, prefer to wait until after completing your work obligations before enjoying a drink in your own time? Recently, Green Party MP Hannah Spencer raised concerns about the practice of drinking alcohol on the job, particularly in the context of Westminster’s well-known drinking culture.

During an online interview with Politics Joe last week, Hannah, who represents Gorton and Denton, expressed discomfort with the prevalence of alcohol consumption in the Commons. She highlighted instances where individuals were drinking between votes, noting that such behavior would be unacceptable in other professional settings.

Her remarks have sparked reactions from colleagues across the political spectrum. Labour MP Natalie Fleet of Bolsover, who abstains from drinking herself, mentioned the smell of “fags & beer” in the Commons as contributing to a sense of normalcy. Meanwhile, Luke Charters, Labour’s MP for York Outer, dismissed the issue as sensationalism.

Hannah’s concerns are not unfounded and have been echoed by others in the past. Former Chief of Staff Sue Gray previously called for the closure of the Commons bars due to similar issues. A report from Parliament’s behavior watchdog in 2023 linked the drinking culture in Westminster to incidents of intimidating behavior and an unsafe working environment.

While many professionals work late, such as bus drivers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, and teachers, the idea of consuming alcohol during work hours is generally unacceptable. The double standard of MPs advocating for their right to drink on the job while holding others to different standards is concerning.

It is questionable why MPs, who are public servants, feel entitled to maintain a culture of drinking during work hours. Instead of defending their behavior, they should consider shifting drinking activities to after work hours to maintain professionalism and avoid compromising their responsibilities.

The pushback against Hannah’s concerns by some MPs is predictable but disappointing. As representatives of the public, they should prioritize accountability and set a positive example. Reform leader Nigel Farage attempted to downplay Hannah’s stance, but the need for reform in outdated practices remains a valid point.
