“May Bank Holiday Benefit Payments Moved Up”

Next week, the payment date for certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, will be brought forward for many recipients due to the upcoming May bank holiday on Monday, May 4. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) does not process benefit payments on bank holidays, so beneficiaries scheduled to receive payments on May 4 will be paid on the preceding Friday, May 1.

A similar early payment will occur for the second bank holiday on Monday, May 25, with benefits expected to be paid on Friday, May 22 instead. While receiving payments early can result in a longer gap until the next payment, the amount paid and the payment method remain unchanged unless personal circumstances have been altered.

The adjustment in payment dates will also impact certain HMRC benefits, including Child Benefit. The frequency of benefit payments varies depending on the specific benefit claimed; for instance, Universal Credit is typically paid monthly on a fixed day, whereas Child Benefit is usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.

It is important to note that Universal Credit now replaces several previous benefits, including Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits, and Housing Benefit. Beneficiaries can refer to the detailed list below to understand the payment frequencies of specific benefits.

In case of any payment discrepancies, beneficiaries should first check their bank accounts and verify the payment date. If the payment is missing, they are advised to contact the relevant helpline, though these services may not be available on bank holidays, requiring individuals to reach out on the next working day.
